Your Potential

When I think about potential, I see it as “seeds” within me that are just waiting to sprout and blossom. This thought is what keeps me excited and moving forward every day – and what especially keeps me stretching. For me, stretching out of my comfort zone is like fertilizer for the “seeds”. I imagine in my mind that today, tomorrow, this next person I meet, the next new experience I have – or the culmination of all the small actions I take could be just what it takes to “arouse those seeds” and have them come alive in all their glory.

What “seeds” do you imagine are ready to bloom within you?

These are the “seeds” of potential. Our inherent ability to grow and develop into the people we are capable of becoming. I believe that we are all capable of far more than we sometimes give ourselves credit for. I have already witnessed it in the lives of my clients as well as my own life. One such experience for me was getting involved with Doug Hodges and Susan Maravetz of ThinkWorkPlay. As some of you may know (or if you know me will understand) that my first reaction when I was approached by Doug and Susan was one of disbelief and caution. I remember saying something like “I can’t coach golfers; I have never set foot on a golf course”! This thought changed after I listened to Doug’s passionate description of the teambuilding program he and Susan offered through TWP. I connected so well to the values this program embodied that I was hooked and I signed on as an affiliated coach with them.

When has your “I can’t” turned into “I can and will”?

What potential did this unlock within me? I’ll describe it in the Think Work Play model…

I started thinking differently. This experience showed me that I could see a game that I had preconceived notions about in a whole new light, that golf could be a metaphor for life and work.

I was working differently. I further tapped into and developed my coaching ability as I implemented the signature TWP teambuilding exercises on the golf course and in the seminar room. I also learned new technology – Heart math coherence tool which measures stress levels using biofeedback.

It had me playing differently. I not only learned to navigate a golf course, drive a golf cart and hold a golf club; I hit one of my first shots 130 yards using a 9 iron for a beautiful shot – and all this with my eyes closed – what an experience!

When have you thought, worked or played differently?
